Yamanote, the Tokyo loop line

Inaugurated in 1885, when it was operating between Ueno and Akabane, the Yamanote line was later expanded to Shinagawa, and the loop was finally completed in 1956.

With its 29 stations, the Yamanote line connects the most important urban centers of Tokyo, thus allowing access to all the peripheral lines. An interesting fact is that this unique feature originates in the prewar era, when the Ministry of Railways forbade private railways to cross the Yamanote loop.

As a result, many private companies established transfer stations connected to the Yamanote stations, which led to the development of the surrounding areas...
