The “robot anime” (ロボット, robotto) (known outside Japan as mecha anime) is a Japanese animation genre featuring walking robots (called mecha), usually bipedal, with arms and hands able to use objects and usually controlled by pilots.
It is considered that the genre started in 1956, with Mitsuteru Yokoyama’s manga Tetsujin 28-gō. The giant robot described in manga was 18 meters tall, had a humanoid shape and was controlled by a remote. Tetsujin was a Super Robot (スーパーロボット, Sūpā Robotto), sub-genre describing almost indestructible robots, with fantastic weapons and powers.
The most popular mecha, Gundam, appeared in 1972, produced by Sunrise studios. Unlike Tetsujin, Gundam is a Real Robot (リアルロボット, Riaru Robotto), a mecha powered by more or less conventional engines and using scientifically explainable weapons.
In time, the genre became popular both in Japan and overseas and in the last years statues and life-size replicas of these giant robots were built, some of them becoming famous tourist attractions.
Here I will present you a top of these “giant robot” related tourist attractions. ;)
6th place: The Gundam statue from Yasu
Genul “robot anime” (ロボット, robotto) (cunoscut ca mecha anime în afara Japoniei) este un gen de animaţie japoneză în care apar vehicule de cele mai multe ori bipede, cu braţe şi mâini, capabile să folosească obiecte şi în general controlate de un pilot.
Se consideră că genul a apărut în 1956, odată cu manga Tetsujin 28-gō scrisă de Mitsuteru Yokoyama. Robotul gigantic care apare în manga are 18 metri înălţime, formă umanoidă şi este controlat cu ajutorul unei telecomenzi. Tetsujin este un Super Robot (スーパーロボット, Sūpā Robotto), o ramură a genului mecha, cu roboţi aproape indestructibili, dotaţi cu arme cu puteri fantastice.
Cel mai popular mecha, Gundam, a apărut în seria anime Mobile Suit Gundam produsă de Sunrise în 1972. Spre deosebire de Tetsujin, Gundam face parte din genul Real Robot (リアルロボット, Riaru Robotto), fiind dotat cu motoare care funcţionează cu surse relativ convenţionale de energie şi având arme care pot fi explicate mai mult sau mai puţin ştiinţific.
În timp, genul mecha a devenit popular atât în Japonia cât şi în afara ei, iar în ultimii ani În Japonia au fost construite statui şi machete în mărime reală ale acestor roboţi gigantici, unele dintre ele devenind atracţii turistice.

Locul 6. Statuia Gundam din Yasu
Follow up:
Three years ago, the owner of a stone sculpting shop from Yasu built a giant stone statue of Gundam which, obviously, became quickly a local attraction.
The statue is made from two large blocks of granite, is 4 meters talls and weights about 10 tons.
I placed it on the 6th place because while well proportioned and finished, it’s not built on a specific scale and also, I couldn’t recognize what specific Gindam it represents. If anyone is aware, please let me know…

5th place: The Gundam statue from Suginami
In front of the Seibu Kamiigusa train station in Suginami, you can admire a splendid statue representing the Gundam RX-78-2 robot.
The statue, built by the citizens of Suginami City, is 3 meters tall and is made of bronze.
Gundam RX-78-2 is the original Gundam mecha, introduced in the TV anime series Mobile Suit Gundam created by the Sunrise studios in 1979. Here it is in the original televised trailer:
The statue is not a scale reproduction but it has a perfect balance between details and stylization and in my opinion it satisfies both a giant robots fan and an art lover.

4th place: The Gundam RX-78-2 from Fujikyu Highland
On July 2007, in the Fuji-Q Highland (Fujikyu Highland) amusement park from Fujiyoshida, Yamanashi prefecture, the Gundam Crisis attraction was opened to the public, featuring a life-size model of the Gundam RX-78-2, the first 1:1 scale model Gundam ever built.
The model, 18 meters long is well detailed but it was built to be displayed lying flat (and this is why I placed it on the 4th place…).
However, the cockpit is opened and can be visited after playing an 8 minutes video game.

3rd place: Tetsujin 28-gō from Kobe
The inauguration ceremony of the Tetsujin 28-gō giant robot statue was held on October 4th 2009, in the Wakamatsu-cho district from Kobe.
The robot was built as a symbol of the city’s revival after the devastating Kobe Earthquake from 1995, and is also a tribute to the author of the Tetsujin 28-gō manga, Mitsuteru Yokoyama, who was born in Kobe.
The 78 years old seiyū (voice actor) Minoru Yada, who played the inventor’s assistant in the televised series, participated at the ceremony holding a replica of the remote device used in the show to control the robot:

The statue from Kobe is made at a precise 1:1 scale, is 15.3 meters tall, weights 50 tons and was an investment of approx. 1.4 million dollars.
The giant robot is very well reproduced, however it doesn’t feature lights or movements, so I placed it on the 3rd place.

2nd place: The Votoms Scopedog life-size model
On the second place of this top I placed one of the most amazing giant robot models, the Votoms Scopedog 1:1 scale model, built by Kogoro Kurata, an ironworker from Tokyo.
The Votoms Scopedog appeared in the televised anime series Armored Trooper VOTOMS (装甲騎兵ボトムズ, Sōkō Kihei Botomuzu), produced by the Sunrise studios starting in 1983.

This amazing scale model is made from iron, weights 2 tons and is 4 meters tall. It was built in 2005 and it was displayed at several expositions: Japan Iron and Steel Federation, Japan’s Character and Hobby Collection 2007.
Two years ago, PingMag published an interview with Kogoro Kurata, where he explained the reasons that made him realize this project:
“I really just wanted to prove to people that you can make huge things using iron. It ended up taking a year, and in the middle of it all I broke a bone working on it. It would have actually taken six months if I hadn’t gotten injured…“

Unfortunately, I have no information when and where this amazing construction will be again available to the public.
1st place: Gundam RX-78-2 from Odaiba
On the 30th anniversary of the Gundam robot franchise, during July and August 2009, a life-size statue of the RX-78-2 Gundam was built in the Shiokaze Park in Odaiba, Tokyo.
When the 18 meters tall robot was inaugurated, the organizers were anticipating 1.5 million visitors.
The statue had a bigger success than expected and over 4.15 million people visited the giant Gundam. The record number of visitors per day was 185000, on August 23rd.
The Gundam was built from fiberglass plastic over a steel frame…
… and was extremely detailed:

The body was provided with 50 light emitting points and 14 locations for generating mist and also feature a moving head.
The statue was dismantled at the beginning of September, but in July 2010 will be reassembled and displayed in Shizuoka. See you there!

Acum trei ani, proprietarul unui atelier de sculptură în piatră din Yasu a realizat o statuie gigantică reprezentând un Gundam, care, normal, a devenit imediat un punct de atracţie al oraşului.
Statuia este realizată din două bucăţi mari de granit, are 4 metri înălţime şi cântăreşte 10 tone.
Ocupă locul al şaselea pentru că cu toate că este bine proporţionată şi atent finisată, nu a fost construită la o anume scara şi, de asemenea, nu am putut recunoaşte ce anume model de Gundam reprezintă. Dacă vreunul dintre voi cunoaşte acest lucru, vă rog să-mi spuneţi…

Locul 5. Statuia Gundam din Suginami
În faţa staţiei de tren Seibu Kamiigusa din Suginami puteţi admira o superbă statuie reprezentând un Gundam RX-78-2.
Statuia din Suginami, construită de locuitorii oraşului, este realizată din bronz şi are 3 metri înălţime.
Gundam RX-78-2 este originalul mecha Gundam, apărut în seria anime Mobile Suit Gundam, realizată de studioul Sunrise în anul 1979. Iată-l în trailer-ul original:
Statuia nu este o reproducere la scara, însă are un echilibru perfect între detalii şi stilizare şi după părerea mea, mulţumeşte deopotrivă fanii roboţilor gigantici şi iubitorii de artă.

Locul 4. Statuia RX-78-2 Gundam de la Fujikyu Highland
Pe 7 iulie 2007, în parcul de distracţii Fuji-Q Highland (Fujikyu Highland) din Fujiyoshida, prefectura Yamanashi, a fost deschis punctul de atracţie Gundam Crisis, ocazie cu care a fost expus un model Gundam RX-78-2, primul Gundam scara 1:1 care s-a construit vreodată.
Statuia, de 18 metri înălţime, este bine detaliată dar a fost construită pentru a fi expusă doar culcată pe spate (acesta fiind şi motivul pentru care am pus-o pe locul al patrulea).
Cockpit-ul este deschis şi poate fi vizitat, după ce ai jucat un joc video care durează 8 minute.

Locul 3. Statuia Tetsujin 28-gō din Kobe
Pe 4 octombrie 2009, în districtul Wakamatsu-cho din Kobe a avut loc ceremonia de inaugurare a statuii gigantice Tetsujin 28-gō.
Robotul a fost construit pentru a fi un simbol al reconstrucţiei oraşului după cutremurul devastator din 1995 şi de asemenea, un omagiu creatorului lui Tetsujin, Mitsuteru Yokoyama, care s-a născut în Kobe.
Actorul care a interpretat vocea asistentului inventatorului robotului în seria anime, Minoru Yada, în vârstă de 78 de ani, a ţinut telecomanda robotului la ceremonia de inaugurare:

Statuia din Kobe este realizată precis la scara 1:1, are 15,3 metri înălţime, cântăreşte 50 tone şi a costat aproximativ 1,4 milioane de dolari.
Robotul gigant este foarte bine realizat, dar nu are părţi în mişcare sau lumini, aşa că l-am plasat pe locul al treilea.

2. Votoms Scopedog scara 1:1
Pe locul al doilea am pus unul dintre cele mai frumoase modele de roboţi gigantici, Votoms Scopedog scara 1:1, realizat de Kogoro Kurata, un fierar din Tokyo.
Votoms Scopedog a apărut în seria anime Armored Trooper VOTOMS (装甲騎兵ボトムズ, Sōkō Kihei Botomuzu), care a fost difuzată de studioul Sunrise începând cu 1983.
Pentru a vă familiariza cu aceşti roboţi, iată câteva secvenţe din Armored Trooper VOTOMS: Pailsen Files:
Modelul a fost realizat din metal, cântăreşte 2 tone şi are 4 metri înălţime. A fost terminat în 2005 şi a fost expus la mai multe expoziţii (Japan Iron and Steel Federation, Japan’s Character and Hobby Collection 2007).
Acum 2 ani, PingMag a publicat un interviu cu Kogoro Kurata în care acesta explică motivele care l-au determinat să realizeze acest proiect:
“Am vrut să demostrez oamenilor că se pot realiza obiecte atât de mari din fier. Am lucrat la el un an şi când eram pe la jumătate mi-am rupt un os. Ar fi fost gata în şase luni dacă nu m-aş fi accidentat.“

Din păcate, este singura statuie dintre cele prezentate despre care nu am informaţii când şi unde va mai fi expusă.
Locul întâi: Statuia Gundam RX-78-2 din Odaiba
Pentru aniversarea a 30 de ani de la lansarea Gundam, în perioada iulie-august 2009, o statuie în mărime reală reprezentând un Gundam RX-78 a fost expusă în parcul Shiokaze din Odaiba, Tokyo.
Când s-a terminat construcţia, se anticipau aproximativ 1,5 milioane de vizitatori. Succesul a fost însă mult mai mare, peste 4,15 milioane de oameni au venit să-l vadă pe marele Gundam. Recordul de spectatori într-o zi a fost pe data de 23 august, 185.000
Gundam-ul a fost realizat din panouri din fibră de sticlă, montate pe un schelet metalic…
… şi este extraordinar de bine detaliat:

Pe corp sunt montate 50 de puncte care emit lumină şi 14 locaţii care generează ceaţă, iar capul se poate mişca.
Statuia a fost dezasamblată la începutul lunii septembrie, dar în luna iulie 2010 va fi din nou asamblată şi expusă în Shizuoka!
