Japanese traditional design, Kaeribana lotus ornament

Sat, July 26, 2014, by Muza-chan

Lotus is an important symbol in Japan and can be found on many decorative designs and architectural elements. I wrote some time ago about the inverted lotus bud, called gyakuren, an ornament used for porch pillars.

Another lotus-inspired design is kaeribana, shaped like an opened lotus flower, photographed here carved on the pedestal of the copper lanterns inside the Toshōgu Temple in Ueno, Tokyo.
