The Ninomaru garden of the Nijō castle was designed as we see it today by Tokugawa Iemitsu, the third shogun of the Tokugawa dynasty, for the visit of the Emperor Go-Mizunoo.
The three islands in today’s photo were built then, and the impressive collection of rocks was added during the period of the eighth Tokugawa shogun, Yoshimune.
