A Spiritual Look at the Great Buddha of Kamakura

The Great Buddha from Kamakura (Daibutsu) represents the Amida Buddha (in Japanese Amida Nyorai), the Buddha of the Infinite Light, the main Deity of the Buddhist Sect Jodo (Pure Land).

Actually, Buddha is not a name, but a honorific term, like the Christian Mesia. Buddha comes from Sanskrit and it is the past participle of the verb Buddh, meaning “to awaken” or “to know", translated in English as “one who has awakened to the truth".
In Japanese it is also referred as Butsu, hence Daibutsu (written 大仏 or 大佛), from 大 Dai, meaning Great and 仏 or 佛 Butsu (the On reading), meaning Buddha.

In the Mahayana tradition there are many Buddha. The Historical Buddha (the Prince Siddhartha Gautama, also known as Shakyamuni, the founder of Buddhism) is one of them and the statues of the various Buddha share common attributes.

The Amida Buddha is not Siddhartha Gautama, it is a monk named Dharmakara, who become a Buddha and lived in very old times (or in another realm…).
Amida Buddha is usually represented wearing simple monk clothes and the Kamakura Daibutsu is no exception.

The hair is represented in small spiral curls (Rahotsu in Japanese). This is an allusion to a legend about Prince Siddhartha, who at one moment pulled his hair together into a top knot and cut it. After the cut, the hair spiraled into fine curls and he never needed to cut its hair again.
The statue of Amida Buddha must always have 656 curls.

On the top of the head we can see Ushnisha (Nikkei in Japanese), a bump on top of the head symbolizing the fact that Buddha is all-knowing and also symbolizing a fully developed top chakra.

At the front base of the Nikkei we can see a circular object, the Nikkeishū (Nikkei Jewel), which “radiates the light of wisdom":

Also, on the forehead, we can see Urna (Byakugo in Japanese), symbolic the representation of the third eye, emitting rays of light and symbolizing that Buddha is all-seeing.
Usually, on Buddha statues the third eye is represented from a crystal or a gem. On the Kamakura Great Buddha, Byakugo is made of pure silver, weighing 13.5 kilograms.

The elongated ears symbolize that Buddha is all-hearing…

The hands are represented in the position of Mida no Jōin (Meditation Mudra), a Japanese specific position, used exclusively for Amida Buddha.

Marele Buddha din Kamakura (Daibutsu) îl reprezintă pe Amida Buddha (in japoneză Amida Nyorai), Buddha al Luminii Infinite, principala zeitate a sectei Jodo (Pure Land).

De fapt, Buddha nu este un nume, ci un termen onorific, ca termenul creştin Mesia. Buddha vine din sanscrită şi este participiul trecut al verbului Buddh, care înseamnă “a se trezi, a cunoaşte", tradus cu “cel treaz".
În japoneză se foloseşte termenul Butsu, de aici denumirea Daibutsu (scris 大仏 sau 大佛): 大 Dai, însemnând Mare şi 仏 sau 佛 Butsu (în citirea On), însemnând Buddha.

In tradiţia Mahayana sunt mai mulţi Buddha, Buddha istoric (Prinţul Siddhartha Gautama, cunoscut şi cu numele de Shakyamuni, fondatorul buddhismului) fiind doar unul dintre ei, iar statuile lor au atribute comune.

Amida Buddha nu este Siddhartha Gautama, ci este un călugăr pe nume Dharmakara care a devenit Buddha şi care a trăit cu mult timp în urmă (sau într-o altă realitate…).
Amida Buddha este reprezentat purtând haine de călugăr, iar Daibutsu din Kamakura nu face excepţie.

Şuviţele răsucite de păr (în japoneză Rahotsu ) fac aluzie la o legendă despre Prinţul Siddhartha, care la un moment dat şi-a legat părul într-un nod deasupra capului şi apoi l-a tăiat. După tăiere, părul s-a aşezat în şuviţe răsucite şi nu a mai avut nevoie să mai fie tăiat vreodată.
Statuile care îl reprezintă pe Amida Buddha au întotdeauna 656 şuviţe.

Pe creştetul capului putem vedea Ushnisha (în japoneză Nikkei), o umflătură care simbolizează faptul că Buddha este atotcunoscător dar şi deschiderea completă a celei de-a 7-a chakra.

La baza Nikkei putem vedea un obiect circular, denumit Nikkeishū (Nikkei Jewel), care “radiază lumina înţelepciunii":

Pe frunte are Urna (în japoneză Byakugo), reprezentarea simbolică a celui de al treilea ochi, care emite raze de lumină şi care simbolizează faptul că Buddha vede tot.
De obicei, pe statui cel de-al treilea ochi este reprezentat folosind un cristal sau o gemă. La Daibutsu din Kamakura Byakugo este realizat din argint şi cântăreşte 13,5 kg.

Mâinile sunt în poziţia Mida-no-Jouin (Meditation Mudra), o poziţie folosită în Japonia exclusiv pentru Amida Buddha.
