The complex of hot springs known as Beppu Jigoku ("Beppu hell") appeared 1200 years ago, after the eruption of Mount Tsurumi. About its apparition there's an interesting local legend that says that Ōkuninushi, one of the most important Shinto gods, god of nation-building, farming, business, and medicine, has built a pipe with which he brought to Beppu the thermal water from the springs of Ehime.
Ehime is the place of the
Dōgo Onsen (which also has
a legend involving Ōkuninushi), and it is 132 kilometers away, on the Shikoku island...
