Muza-chan's Gate to Japan

Shinjuku Skyscrapers, the symbols of modern Japan

Tue, September 10, 2013, by Muza-chan
In 1898, at the beginning of the Meiji Period, in Shinjuku was innaugurated the first modern water plant, the Yodobashi Water Purification Plant, which is considered one of the first signs of the modernization of Japan.

70 years later, after the water plant was demolished, the area was again reassigned for a symbol of modernity: the first skyscrapers from Nishi-Shinjuku. The very first one was the Keio Plaza Hotel, built in 1971, and in my photo you can see, from right to left: the Sompo Japan Building, the Shinjuku Nomura Building, the Shinjuku Center Building, the Shinjuku Mitsui Building and the Shinjuku Sumitomo Building, all of them built during the following 8 years.

Today, all these buildings are almost 40 years old, but the place still gives off a feeling of modernity...
