Muza-chan's Gate to Japan

Shinto Shrines, Taisha

Sat, September 28, 2013, by Muza-chan
If you looked at the names of the Shinto shrines, you noticed that they are always composed of two or three words, apparently without rules. However, the name of the shrine can give a hint to the shrine's network (for example Inari shrines, Hachiman shrines or Kumano shrines) and to the shrine's status (like the Jingu designation).

Take for example the shrine from today's photo, Kasuga Taisha from Nara: Kasuga refers to the area where the shrine is located, near the Mount Kasuga, while Taisha means "Grand Shrine".
