Maybe I should prepare a list of places "to visit" in Japan... But until then, here's a place that should be on any tourist's to-do list, the complex of Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples from Nikko.
I'm recommending Nikko for exactly the same reasons why it was listed as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites: it is a wonderful and unique illustration of the Edo period's religious architectural style and everything here was built with perfection to detail, whether we're speaking of decorations or construction techniques (e.g. the earthquake resistant pagoda or Ishidorii stone gate).
