Tokyo Ginza parasols tables

Thu, August 3, 2017

I wrote yesterday about the origin of the gin-bura, Ginza strolling. About the same period, 100 years ago, another custom appeared in Ginza, the use of the parasol tables.

The first outdoor cafe in Ginza was established in 1911 by Shozo Matsuyama, a painter who visited France and wanted to create a French atmosphere in Tokyo. He opened Café Printemps, which became famous very fast, attracting writers, actors, musicians, intellectuals and geisha, all coming to enjoy a cup of coffee and interesting discussions.

That was the begining of the parasols tables, which are still set up in weekends, when Ginza becomes a pedestrian paradise between noon and 5PM, every weekend and on public holidays.
