Matsuyama Castle courtyard

Sat, June 3, 2017

Built at the beginning of the Edo period, the beginning of an era of peace that lasted for 250 years, the Matsuyama castle was transferred intact to the army of Tosa at the end of Bakumatsu period. The castle suffered damages only two times during its history, first in 1784, when it was hit by lightning, being rebuilt in 1820, and second during the bombings of the WWII, when several gates and a yagura were destroyed.

Today, due to the reconstruction works begun in 1966, the Matsuyama castle is one of the best preserved castles in Japan.
