Takamatsu city unique manhole cover

Mon, May 1, 2017

The artistic manhole covers in Japan can be defined as a form of pavement art. Across the country, they are decorated with motifs inspired by the local attractions, celebrations, festivals, products or delicacies, and over the years they became so popular that tourists are often trying to decipher their encoded message.

Takamatsu city, in the Kagawa Prefecture (Shikoku Island) decided to use the fame of the artistic manhole covers to present a lot of information: the local Udon dishes, because the city is nicknamed the “Udon Kingdom", the traditional Temari balls, and also a QR code for the website of Sunport Takamatsu, the business and shopping district erected around JR Takamatsu Station.
