At the beginning of the Edo period, one of the most important scholars in Japan’s history, Hayashi Gahō, compiled a list of “Three Views of Japan", Nihon Sankei. The list included the pine-clad islands of Matsushima in Miyagi, the sandbar of Amanohashidate in Miyazu Bay and the Itsukushima Shrine in Hiroshima.

Due to the indisputable beauty and the uniqueness of these three places, the list became a reference that lasted until today. In 1915, a set of “New Three Views of Japan” was added trough a national election.
