Yatsuhashi bridge in the Fujita Memorial Garden

Among the many types Japanese bridges, the most beautiful is Yatsuhashi (meaning “eight bridges"), a design that was first described more than 1000 years ago, in the Ise Monogatari ("The Tales of Ise"), a collection of poems and stories from the Heian period.

Made of eight wooden boards placed in zigzag, the bridge is amazingly pleasant to the eye and really fun to traverse…
