Located in the western part of the Shikoku island, the Uwajima castle is probably the most remote of the twelve surviving Japanese castles. The easiest way to visit it is by starting in Matsuyama, from where you can take an easy day trip to see the castle and the nearby garden, Tensha-en.

Built by Tōdō Takatora at the end of the Sengoku period, the main keep survived until today in its original form, being one of the best preserved Japanese castles.
