Abandoned at the beginning of the Meiji Period, the beautiful Fukuyama castle escaped demolition and remained, until the middle of the 20th century, one of the few surviving Japanese castles.

Unfortunately the main tower and many other buildings were destroyed during the WWII bombings, and today the Sujigane Gomon gate and the Fushimi yagura turret are the only surviving structures of the castle. The main tower, photographed here, was rebuilt of concrete in 1966.
