Japanese castle architecture, Tonashimon

Here’s a rare style of castle gate architecture, found at the Matsuyama Castle. Called tonashi, a word that literally means “no door", this is a variety of the koraimon gate, built, as the name says, without any doors.

In fact, this is a castle defense trick designed to draw attackers into a trap, because behind the gate there a small, heavily defended space…
