About Japan from... manhole covers, Hakodate's star-shaped Goryokaku fort

Sat, September 26, 2015

This attractively designed manhole cover in Hakodate unites two of the city’s symbols: the star-shaped Goryokaku, which was the first Western-style fort in Japan, and the colonial-style Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward.

The Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward was built from public donations in 1910 and it was designated as Important Cultural Property.
