Defining images of Japan, Zen garden

The Japanese Zen garden (karesansui) were invented 700 years ago, and since then they were continually refined. Generations and generations of masters perfected them, taking the art of stylization to perfection.

Here’s such a perfect Zen garden, Dokuza-tei, the “Garden of Solitary Meditation” of Zuiho-in, Kyoto. Designed in 1961 by the master Shigemori Mirei, it is truly a masterpiece of its kind and a view that defines Japan…
