Modern Zen Garden

Almost 700 years have passed since the first Japanese karesansui rock garden was built inside the Zen temple of Saihō-ji, Kyoto, and during this time many generations of masters have developed and refined this gardening style.

Closer to our times, in 1930, one of the most respected garden masters, Mirei Shigemori, designed this modern Zen garden, expressing the Zen aesthetics of simplicity with a checkered pattern created with rocks and moss. A gardening masterpiece to be admired inside the Tofuku-ji Temple, in Kyoto…
