Japanese traditions, water splashing the Gods

Thu, July 31, 2014

Offerings (coins, flowers, sake, food, etc.) and water purification are common to all Buddhist temples, but in some of them there’s also a lesser-known tradition, the water splashing, which spiritually signifies a combination of the two rituals.

After the pilgrim purifies himself, with a wish in mind, he throws water over the statue of the worshiped god. This tradition is often related to the Jizō and Fudō-myōō deities, as in this photo, taken at Ryusen-ji, a temple in Meguro, Tokyo.
