Cute five-toe socks

The traditional Japanese footwear was designed to be worn with tabi, a type of socks with separate big toe which are still very popular, being an important part of the traditional attire.

But if you visit the specialized stores in Japan, you will notice a new trend, the five-toe socks, which are having an amazing success. An interesting fact is that, although they may seem to be derived from the traditional tabi, the five-toe socks were, in fact, invented by an American lady, relatively recently, in 1969… The design was inspired by the glove - they were named by the inventor “glove socks” - and after they were quite popular in America during the ’70s, they also became widespread in Japan. And, as you can see in the photo, they allow for an extremely cute design…
