Tokyo, the largest megacity in the world

Tue, January 14, 2014

According to various statistics, there are between 25 and 31 megacities in the world - metropolitan areas with a population larger than 10 million people. But in all the versions, the largest megacity is Tokyo, with its more than 35 million inhabitants. Interestingly, Japan has another megacity in these lists, Osaka, ranked the 15th place, with a population over 16 million.

From the city of Edo, which was just under 700,000 inhabitants in 1800 (when the largest city was Beijing, with more than 1 million people), Tokyo grew to 1.5 million in 1900 (by then the largest city was London, with 6.5 million people!).
In 1950 Tokyo was at the 7 million mark (when the largest city was New York, with 12.5 million inhabitants), then the city grew amazingly: over 20 million inhabitants in 1965 and 23 million in 1975…

But in the field of architecture, with all this growth, Tokyo somehow managed to remain a low-rise city, with relatively few skyscrapers compared to other megacities…
