Kaichi Watanabe was amongst the first Japanese engineers who have studied in United Kingdom, immediately after the Meiji Restoration. He worked in Scotland at the famous “Forth Bridge” which, finished in 1890, held the record of the longest cantilever bridge in the world (521 meters) for 27 years, being surpassed in 1917 by the “Quebec Bridge” from Canada (549 meters).

Having such an important pioneer in the history of bridges, it’s probably natural that Japan owns the third-longest cantilever bridge in the world: built in 1973, the Minato Bridge from Osaka Bay has a length of 510 meters, being only 11 meters shorter than the old “Forth Bridge", which is still on the second place…
