Tokyo Architecture, the Giant Robot illusion

Mon, May 13, 2013

One of the most original buildings from Tokyo is the Aoyama Technical College, designed in 1990 by the architect Makoto Sei Watanabe. Seen from the front street, the building looks like a giant robot from the Gundam anime series, so people are even calling it the “Gundam building"…

Unfortunately, this architectural jewel is cramped between many other buildings and it is almost impossible to admire it in its full complexity. When I saw it for the first time, several years ago, I just passed in front of it and I didn’t had the time to look around it.

But recently I had the opportunity to stroll around it, searching for another angle… , and I found out that the giant robot view is… just an interesting architectural illusion… Seen from the back, the building looks more like… an insect?
