How the first Imperial Palace from Kyoto looked like

Sat, April 6, 2013

The Heian Shrine from Kyoto was built in 1895, on the occasion of the 1100th anniversary of the establishment of Heian-kyo - the former name of Kyoto - by the Emperor Kammu. The complex was intended to be a replica of the first Imperial Palace, built in Heian-kyo in 794, but because the available space was limited, it was designed as a reduced-scale replica, at the 5/8 scale. But even so, its size is impressive!

In today’s photo, you can see right in the middle the Outer Sanctuary (Daigoku-den), to the left the White Tiger Tower (Byakko-ro) and to the right the Blue Dragon Tower (Soryu-ro).
