Japanese gardens, the Lying down Dragon Bridge

The Japanese gardens featuring ponds are always including at least one bridge and some of them are extremely beautiful (search “Japanese+garden+bridge”). But besides the common “bridge” concept, some gardens also feature a sort of walkways made from stones, like the one in this photo, Garyu-kyo, the “Lying down Dragon” bridge from the Naka Shin’en (Middle Garden) of the Heian Shrine, Kyoto.

These rocks have their own story, they were once part of two of the most famous bridges from Kyoto, the Sanjo Ohashi and the Gojo Ohashi, both crossing the Kamo River. After an earthquake destruction, remains of the pillars were brought here and this simple but exquisite walkway was built…
