There are many Daibutsu (Great Buddha statues) in Japan, some of them are well-known, like the ones from Kamakura or Nara, others were famous once but have since faded away…

Here is one of them, famous during the Edo and Meiji era, sculpted by Ota Kyuemon in 1690. It is known as the Tenno-ji Daibutsu, because originally it was located near the five-storied pagoda from the Tenno-ji Temple. In 1874 it was moved in the western corner of Yanaka cemetery and in 1933 was moved again on the today’s location, inside the Gokokusan Tenno-ji Temple from Yanaka, Tokyo. Since then it was repaired and now it makes for an amazingly beautiful sight, especially as I saw it, during a nice summer rain.
