Japanese spiritual architecture, Komyodo Hall

Sat, July 14, 2012

Narita-san Shinshō-ji Temple is one of the best known temples in Kanto and at the same time one of the oldest. Like in many other Japanese temples, its buildings were reconstructed multiple times (for example the Great Main hall was last rebuilt in 1968), but if you’re looking for old, original Japanese architecture, the temple has a few surprises…

The building from this photo, Komyodo Hall, is one of them - it was built in 1701, originally being the temple’s Main Hall. One of the most beautiful buildings in the complex, with walls lacquered in red and a specific Japanese irimoya roof, it is designated as an Important Cultural Property and it enshrines the main deity of the Shingon Esoteric Buddhism, Dainichi Nyorai Buddha.
