Kintai-kyo bridge Iwakuni

Wed, October 16, 2019

It is said that the arches of the Kintai-kyo bridge in Iwakuni, with their intricate wooden structure, resemble nishiki, a famed Japanese brocade embroidered with gold and silver.

The nishiki brocade is so expensive that it is not used for the entire kimono, but only for the sash (obi in Japanese). This analogy gives the name of the bridge, because Kintai means woven gold sash.
