Sightseeing Kyoto, Otowa Waterfall

Thu, August 25, 2011

Kiyomizu-dera from Kyoto is one of the best known temples in Japan and one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The name translates as “Pure Water Temple” and originates from the Otowa Waterfall, located right near the temple.

The waterfall is divided in three streams and it is said that its water has the power to fulfill the wishes. The visitors can drink the water by using cups attached to poles, like the cups used at temizuya. It is believed that each stream has different powers, bringing longevity, success at exams or luck in love… All three quite tempting… but it seems that you must choose just one or two, because drinking from all three is considered greedy.
