Popular Food, Takoyaki

Sun, December 12, 2010

Takoyaki (meaning “fried octopus") was invented about 75 years ago, by a street vendor from Osaka. Since then, it became one of the most popular foods in Japan.
Takoyaki are small dumplings made from batter, a small octopus (or pieces of octopus), ginger, green onion and other ingredients, served hot, with a topping of special sauce. These dumplings are cooked on a special takoyaki pan, made of cast iron, with many spherical molds.

It is often sold at small specialty shops or at festival stalls, where while waiting in line, like the girl from this photo, you can admire the skills of the cook, rotating with precision the delicious dumplings…
