Sakurajima view from Sengan-en

Sun, August 25, 2019

The garden technique of “borrowed scenery” (shakkei in Japanese), which uses the surrounding nature to improve the views of the garden, was invented during the Kamakura period and was used with great effect in the gardens of the Edo period lords.

Photographed here is the Sengan-en garden in Kagoshima, which uses the Sakurajima volcano in the background.
