Twitter's First Japanese Trending Topic

Sat, January 23, 2010

Today, Twitter got its first Trending Topic in Japanese!

The trend lasted about 5 hours (between 11 and 16 GMT) and the message was
さぁ来い! translatable with “I will do sit-ups as many times as this is retweeted! Come on!“.

As usual with Twitter Trending Topics, many people were asking about how could this trend be… trending. However, being written in Japanese, this particular tweet also made the vast majority of people to ask about “what does it means". :)

Well, the message itself was funny enough and I noticed that many people were retweeting it as soon as they were learning the meaning…

I usually don’t participate in trending topics, but this time I couldn’t resist the temptation so I retweeted it…

… and instantly received a lot of questions. Obviously I answered them as best as I could…

I noticed lately a strong growth of Japanese influence on Twitter and some of my friends confirmed it (thanks to @wanwanO and @michichan)

For those of you not familiar yet with Twitter, the Trending Topics are the most common phrases appearing in messages.
