The sumo wrestlers from Ryogoku

Wed, June 10, 2009

At the Ryogoku station (close to the Kokugikan), there’s a statue of sumo wrestlers. With stylized faces and bodies, the statue looks like a 3D representation of an ukiyo-e painting.

The darker stain on the statues bottom makes me wonder if there’s a connection with the Japanese belief that rubbing a part of a statue representing a deity brings luck (Daikoku) or healing (Yakushi). :)
