The 100th anniversary of the Kokugikan sumo arena

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Tokyo’s Kokugikan sumo arena. On June 2nd, 1909, the first Kokugikan arena was opened in Tokyo, on the grounds of the current Eko-in temple, where sumo events had been held during the Edo period.

The name Kokugikan was given by the novelist Emi Suiin, who described sumo as Japan’s kokugi - national sport.

The arena held its final sumo tournament in 1946, being replaced by a new Kokugikan, located in the Kuramae district. Finally, the old building was demolished in 1983.
The current Ryogoku Kokugikan arena was opened in 1985:

Anul acesta se împlinesc 100 de ani de când, pe 2 iunie 1909, s-a deschis în Tokyo prima arenă Kokugikan, situată pe locul actualului templu Eko-in, loc unde s-au desfăşurat turneele de sumo încă din perioada Edo.

Numele Kokugikan a fost dat de scriitorul japonez Emi Suiin, care a descris sumo ca fiind kokugi - sport naţional.

Arena a fost înlocuită în 1946 de o nouă clădire construită în districtul Kuramae şi a fost demolată în 1983.
Actuala arenă de sumo, Ryogoku Kokugikan, a fost deschisă în 1985:
