The Lanterns at Toshougu Shrine

Tue, March 24, 2009

There are 50 large copper lanterns at the Toshougu Shrine in Ueno, offered by daimyo (feudal lords) during the rule of the Tokugawa Shogunate. The name of the daimyo that donated it is writen on the base of each lantern.

The copper lanterns aren’t used for lighting, they are used in religious ceremonies for purification and for sacred fires.
