Pair of rabbit statues at Izumo Taisha

Wed, June 5, 2019

According to an old Japanese legend, Ōkuninushi (the kami of love, marriage and matchmaking) once helped a white rabbit to recover after its skin was ripped by another animal, and to thank him the rabbit made for him a prediction related to his marriage.

Related to this legend, the shrines dedicated to Ōkuninushi-no-Mikoto are always guarded by pairs of rabbit statues, like in this photo taken at Izumo Taisha in Shimane.
