A two tatami mats garden

Sun, March 24, 2019

The small gardens in the interior courtyards are named tsuco-niwa, meaning garden with a surface of one tsubo (a Japanese unit of area equal to 2 tatami mats) which is 3.3 square meters.

Designed to be admired only from outside, they are usually decorated with a few plants, moss and a collection of rocks, like this one from Matsuo-no-Maru in Obi, Miyazaki Prefecture.
