Aizu Bukeyashiki residence

Sun, January 6, 2019

Reconstructed after the original plans, the Saigo Tanomo residence in Aizu Bukeyashiki (samurai residential area) is one of the few high-ranking samurai residences existing in Japan.

Saigo Tanomo was the chief senior councilor (karō in Japanese) of Matsudaira Katamori, the lord of Auzi during the final years of the Edo period.

The house offers a look into the atmosphere and lifestyle of that era, with 38 rooms, some of them populated by wax statues representing the people who lived in the house.
