Hata-age Benzaiten

Fri, November 23, 2018

More than 750 years ago, a musician named Nakahara Mitsuuji donated to the Tsurugaoka Hachimangu shrine in Kamakura a statue of Benzaiten, the goddess of knowledge knowledge, music, arts, wisdom and nature. However, this was an unusual statue, because it represented the goddess nude.

The statue is today at the museum, but the dedicated shrine, Hata-Age Benzaiten, still exists, reconstructed last time in 1956 on one of the islands on the lake nearby the shrine.
