Tue, April 10, 2018

A coat part of the wedding trousseau in the samurai families of the medieval Japan was uchikake, an ornate wedding coat with a long trail, which was worn over the kimono.

Made of high quality brocade and decorated with auspicious symbols, many of them were preserved for many generations, being traditionally gifted at weddings. In the photo is an uchikake beloging to the Aoyagi family in Kakunodate, one of the main retainers of the lord of Kakunodate, Akita.
