Among the Japanese New Year good luck charms, hamaya, the “demon-breaking arrow” is special because it can be bought only during the first days of the year, eventually at the hatsumode. Hamaya is a wooden decorative arrow, considered to ward off misfortune and to attract good luck, and it is to be held inside the house for the entire year.
