The shrine photographed here, Isaniwa Jinja in Matsuyama, was established more than 1800 years ago, dedicated to the legendary Empress Jingu, to Emperor Chuai and to their child, who became Emperor Ōjin.
It is said that Isaniwa shrine was built right on the place where they were accommodated when they visited Dōgo Onsen, but later it was moved to its present-day site.
With time, the importance of the shrine grew, and during the medieval period it was one of the eight shrines selected as protectors for the Matsuyama castle.
