One of the most beautiful and moving ghost stories I ever heard is told at Ankokuji, a temple in Tenjin, Fukuoka.
It is said that three hundred years ago, on a street close by to the temple, there was a sweets store. One night, the owner received the visit of a young woman, who wanted to buy some candies. The next night, she came again with the same request. Intrigued by the late night visits, the owner of the store decided to follow her and he saw her entering inside the temple’s grounds, where she suddenly disappeared…
When the man approached the place where she disappeared, he found only a freshly dug tomb, but he also heard the crying of a baby… Immediately he called the priest, they opened the grave and they found out that it was the tomb of a pregnant woman and her unborn child miraculously survived. And the ghost of her mother was buying candies to feed him…
The child was saved then but later died, and was buried next to his mother. And their tombs are still marked inside the temple…
