Before the Meiji Period, when the short legged table chabudai became popular, the meal was served on trays placed directly on the floor, or on individual box tables, like those photographed here.

Made of wood, these trays were sometimes lacquered or adorned with paintings. The tradition survived until today, and in some restaurants and ryokans you can still enjoy your meal served on old style trays…
