A very ingenious pest control method was discovered long time ago by the Japanese garden caretakers. In October, when the insects are descending the trees to take shelter under the ground, the trees are wrapped with komomaki, a straw mat tied very tight at the bottom.
Instead of crawling under the ground, the insects are taking shelter under the komomaki. At the beginning of spring, before the weather warms up, the straw mats are removed, being burned with the bugs inside…
