Many Japanese castles were built with the tenshu (main tower) elevated on a stone base. The aesthetic impression is improved, but the main reason was, of course, military.
Such a stonewall makes attacks much more difficult, especially if it’s built in a curved fan-shape, a style called ogi kobai ("fan sloping"). Moreover, the fan shape provides extra resistance against earthquakes and landslides.
