The Japanese Zen gardens are never too large, because they are made for meditation and designed to be seen in a single gaze. Traditionally, they are also strictly delimited by walls so that the outside scenery won’t distract the viewer. And as you can see in this photo of the Isshidan garden, inside Ryogen-in, Kyoto, the garden is arranged in front of a building with a porch (called engawa), where the visitor simply sits down and starts the meditation…
