Offerings (coins, flowers, sake, food, etc.) and water purification are common to all Buddhist temples, but in some of them there’s also a lesser-known tradition, the water splashing, which spiritually signifies a combination of the two rituals.
After the pilgrim purifies himself, with a wish in mind, he throws water over the statue of the worshiped god. This tradition is often related to the Jizō and Fudō-myōō deities, as in this photo, taken at Ryusen-ji, a temple in Meguro, Tokyo.
